Vectorworks lighting8/17/2023 Use maonPC to add lighting elements and with a little tweaking you can get really good results. Export to.3ds and Import into GrandMa 3d. It's a very capable Viz, however it only works with MA. I've bid and won a stadium design using the GrandMa 2 version of MA3D. In fact you can do design and viz for free to get bids into client's hands. This combo would cover most of what Vectorworks would bring to the table. That said, I would look at learning Blender for any advanced modeling needs and import those into a Visz and using that to add the lighting elements. Im curious to see what is in store for the 2023 version. In my brief experience, Capture isn't really a 3d modeling program. They are just at vastly different levels of CAD technology. Drawing capability wise, Vectorworks is to photoshop as Capture is to MS paint. The new subscription model is overpriced in my opinion. That pricing us the minimum viable for my company. I am grandfathered in with 2 licenses on the old service select model. I have been using it for 12 years now and It took me about 6 to be not terrible, 8 to be okay and 10 to be good. Vectorworks has a kinda steep learning curve. We need a new, accessible industry standard. Connecting with Vectorworks has been a nightmare, so I want to save you the hassle. Just wanted to type out the “fine print” in case any further Redditors needed the info. I’m writing all this out to say hell no, I didn’t purchase the software, however I did purchase the official certification class and start my free trial so I can at least learn it. This instantly makes the software worth $1k less upon resale. On top of that, the Service Select feature is non transferable, meaning if you want to sell your perpetual license someday, the new user will not have the ability to access upgrades in the future. Therefore, even after spending $4k to buy the software and access to upgrades “for life,” I will still have to pay $730 annually. UPDATE: after working with a couple Vectorworks reps and doing thorough research, I learned that the perpetual license costs $730 per year to maintain Service Select status (aka infinite upgrades). I don’t want to be stuck paying a full price monthly fee for the rest of my career if I let my discount lapse and lose the opportunity to buy a perpetual license with maintenance for life.ĭo I invest $4k on Spotlight + Vision now, even though I won’t be making money as an LD for a while? Further, come January, VectorWorks will be subscription only, meaning I won’t be able to buy it outright. I’m losing eligibility for the VectorWorks Student2Pro license in May currently, I get 40% Spotlight and Vision add on. Here’s the thing: I’ve never touched the program before, but I am thinking of buying it. I’m currently getting certified in the GrandMA3, and I’m looking to learn VectorWorks. Hi! I work in the music industry and am transitioning from live audio to lights.
